The Tiburon Housewife

He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly…

—Proverbs 14:17

Late one Saturday afternoon at the Greyhound, a well-dressed, middle-aged woman approached the Travelers Aid booth. She lived in Tiburon, a picturesque upscale town across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County. Obviously embarrassed, she said she was out of money and trying to get home.

She and her husband had traveled to the seaside town of Carmel and stayed at a local inn for several days. Early that morning before checking out, her husband continued his drinking from the night before and became argumentative. Getting increasingly agitated, and after a particularly angry outburst, he stormed out of the room and drove off. He had all of their credit cards and most of their money—and didn’t return. She said it was not the first time that he’d done this.

Fortunately, they’d already paid for their room, but she had to leave at checkout time and had only enough money to buy a bus ticket from Carmel to San Francisco. Distraught and apologetic, she asked if Travelers Aid could loan her the money she needed to take the Golden Gate Transit bus to Tiburon.

She was greatly relieved when I gave her money for the ticket and she left to catch her bus on Market Street. Soon afterwards we received a nice thank-you card and a generous donation that far exceeded the cost of her ticket.

The Tiburon housewife was fortunate that she had a home to return to. But when Stanley Baker’s “friends” kicked him out of the flat they were sharing, he had nowhere to go but the street.
